Emotional Breakthrough win for Foster

Nick Foster leading the way at Queensland Raceway
Brisbane (Daisy Hill) teenager Nick Foster has broken through to claim an emotional victory in Round 2 of the 2010 Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship at Queensland Raceway near Ipswich over the weekend.
Foster started the weekend by qualifying fifth fastest aboard the #13 Steeline Mygale SJ10a before spun early in the opening 14-lap race, dropping him to the rear of the field. He then showed some impressive speed to charge through the field and salvage a ninth place finish.
This morning’s second race of the weekend marked Foster’s coming of age in the championship with a mature drive manoeuvring his way from ninth place on the grid to claim the first victory of his Formula Ford career.
As a result of his Race 2 win, the 18 year-old started on pole position for the final race aboard the #13 Steeline Mygale SJ10a with his Sonic Motor Racing Services team-mate Geoff Uhrhane alongside. The pair raced side-by-side into the opening turn before Foster slotted into second place on the opening lap.
When Uhrhane slowed on lap two due to a mechanical issue it elevated Foster into the race lead – a position that he never relinquished all the way to the chequered flag.
Foster crossed the line ahead of fellow karting graduates Adam Graham and Ben Jurczak to secure his second race win for the day and the round victory overall.
As a result of this weekend’s results Foster now leads the 2010 championship by nine points over fellow Queenslander and former karting rival Chaz Mostert, with Graham in third place.
The next round of the 2010 Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship will be held in two weeks time at the Winton Motor Raceway near Benalla, Victoria.
WHAT NICK HAD TO SAY …
NICK FOSTER – #13 Steeline Mygale SJ10a:
“It has been a very emotional week for me (Foster’s Grandfather passed away last week), so to come out and win take out my first round in the championship is unreal,” said Foster.
“After the disappointment of yesterday’s opening race when I finished ninth, it was a great comeback today to finish up on top.
“I knew I had the pace after practice in the Steeline Mygale but it was just about driving smart and taking advantage of this speed.
“In the final race the car was very strong in the early laps, which allowed me to get a bit of a gap. But during the middle part of the race I lost some pace after running wide on the marbles, which allowed (Ben) Jurczak to close up a bit.
“Over the closing stages I was able to regather the speed and pull a bit of a gap.
“It is a huge ‘monkey of my back’ to win my first round and it was made even better with the fact that I was able to enjoy it with my family, including Nan who I believe was very nervous watching on.
“The guys in the Sonic team have done a fantastic job all weekend, it is great to reward them with a win.”
