Rick Kelly was the best Castrol runner at QR today, carding two fourth positions

Rick Kelly was the best placed of the Castrol runners at Queensland Raceway today as Craig Lowndes took a double race victory in the unique football-style sprint races.

There were two 22 lap races with a 15 minute window in between for crews to make changes to the cars.

The next best of the Castrol cars was another good performance for Greg Murphy’s Pepsi Max Crew Commodore in sixth.

One then had to scan down the field to find Mark Winterbottom in a gaggle of FPR cars in 13th, followed by Paul Dumbrell and Will Davison. They were further followed by Castrol runners Russell Ingall in the Supercheap Autos machine, Todd Kelly and David Reynolds.

Tony d’Alberto’s tough season continued in the Wilson Security Falcon crossing the line in 25th position.

After the brief break, race two eliminated a number of Castrol runners early – including Todd Kelly who triggered a Safety Car after being slammed by James Courtney.

His team-mate, David Reynolds in the Stratco racer experienced problems early when a tyre was knocked from the rim. He pitted, which put him well down the order. Paul Dumbrell was caught in the same incident.

Kelly backed up his race one performance with fourth, followed by another excellent showing from VIP Petfoods racer – Steve Owen. Murphy scored another top 10 in seventh, whilst Winterbottom salvaged 10th in a difficult day for the factory Ford team.

Russell Ingall was 12th, with Will Davison having been battered and bruised down in 15th. D’Alberto had a better showing bringing his car home in 17th, whilst Dumbrell and Reynolds finished as the final two runners.

Tomorrow will see another 20 minute qualifier and a 65 lap race – all on the softer tyre.
