Wins Galore for Cool Drivers
Monday, October 3rd, 2011A fantastic weekend of racing for the Fujitsu ‘Cool’ Drivers has seen Joey Mawson and Damon Strongman claim NSW State Titles victories at a soggy Newcastle circuit, Brody Appleby win the Circular Head Club Titles in Tasmania and Mildura’s Cameron Waters being crowned as the winner of the Shannon’s Supercar Showdown reality TV show.

Damon Strongman powers home in the NSW State Titles
In horrible conditions and on a sodden circuit, Mawson scored the overall win in Junior Clubman, before backing that up with second place in Junior Max, while Strongman claimed first place outright in Junior National Light and went within a whisker of doing the same in Junior National Heavy.
South Australia’s Todd Hazelwood endured a shocking run of luck from the minute racing commenced with Sunday proving no better than Saturday. A failure to finish in Junior Clubman was soured further by being punted off the road in Junior National Heavy and the just turned 16-year-old was happy to see the back of the Newcastle circuit.
Down South, Appleby enjoyed a strong run to victory in Clubman Light and also took out the 30-lap Senior National Marathon, but came in under weight at race end and was stripped of his hard earned win.
Another major focus of attention was on Cam Waters and the final Shannon’s Showdown episode, with an ecstatic Waters coming out the winner ahead of British Touring Car star Andrew Jordan. At just 17, Waters will now become the youngest ever Bathurst 1000 starter, after pipping the race’s previous youngest starter, Paul Dumbrell, by just seven days.
Waters will line up alongside part time racer and Channel 7 television personality Grant Denyer and will drive the Shannon’s Insurance and Mars Bar backed Kelly Racing Commodore, as the only Wild Card entry joining the regular 28-car grid.
Waters currently leads the Australian Formula Ford Championship with two rounds remaining, the next event taking place on the streets of the Gold Coast in two week’s time.
Plans for the 2012 Fujitsu ‘Cool’ Driver Program are currently being finalised and the continued on-track success of the current eleven driver squad is extremely impressive.
